200 Square Feet with Catio Views

This is a diary of our unique life on the road with our two cats. I write this so we remember what we did and where. Follow along if you are curious!

Blog Fog and Island Clarity

Why do I write a blog in the first place?

Why Blog?

When Greg and I donated our belongings and hit the road to travel back in 2023, it was after many musings over why we shouldn’t do that: How will we get mail? Will the cats adjust? What if we can’t find a place to camp each day? How will we get our prescriptions? What if, what if, what if?

We experienced a version of FOMO. We didn’t want to get to the age of 80 and regret NOT at least giving it a try. Switching to a nomadic lifestyle requires letting go of having (a perception of) control of your life and overcoming fears and occasional discomfort, as well as redefining what is truly important in life…since “we only have 100 years to live” (ish). We now have the same dilemma about doing an Alaska RV trip…

Who on earth would care what a couple of retirees are doing in their late 50’s? I blog mostly so that Greg and I can have a diary of our travels and all that we experience. I also hoped that family and friends would have an interest in what we are doing and follow along. Some do. Some don’t.

Another goal is so that we might inspire our grandchildren to live and thrive in life rather than simply survive. I have tried that option, and it’s tedious.

San Juan Islands are Overwhelmingly Overwhelming

The beauty! The wildlife! Orcas right off the coast! Bald Eagles everywhere! Brain-fog-clearing winds that temporarily deafen my brain from the horrors of the news. For this, I am grateful and take many walks on the bluffs to experience that awesome phenomenon.

To make a long blog short, here is a slideshow of some of the beautiful sights on this lovely island, as well as Orcas Island, which is another gem that I wish everyone could experience. As corny as this might sound, especially to those who know me, it really does “do my heart good” to be here. Ew, who said that? (Also, celebrating four years since my heart event, so my heart really is doing “good!”)

Catio Corner

So, we are offended that the foxes on this island come in shades of orange and gray. Our humans keep joking that people are going to walk by and think we have foxes in the catio. (Shh, Nemo says that Cleo really does resemble a fox and should be released into the prairie to live with her people.)

  2. Dear Laurel & Greg: So beautiful! So calming in the midst of this firestorm caused by the Trumpenfuhrer (Resist, resist, resist!). Keep these nuggets of time and place in your hearts and minds as you march toward our age. They will give you lasting memories and peace that will sustain you even in the most unwelcome moments. Lots of love, Dad & Mom King

  3. I for one love reading your blog and seeing your beautiful photos. We are also Senior Nomads going on 83 and it is the best life ever. Being a free spirit and enjoying nature almost every day. We are going on 11 years of living the life style and many people are jealous of our life, but wouldn’t give up there homes, and their price items. We hope to stay healthy and keep doing what we are doing. You will never have to look back and say I wish we had tried being Nomads, you’re doing it and more power to you. Hugs from the Senior Nomads, Patricia & Bill
