Even when we were tent campers we were hyperaware of the weather when we’d head into the woods for a weekend. It has always seemed obvious to us that many issues can be avoided by being prepared for the weather. We have even cancelled trips or rerouted ourselves around weather. Now that we (and our cats) LIVE in our camper, the motivation to stay one step ahead of the weather is even greater. And with Greg gone for a little while tending to his mom and family I feel oh, so responsible for our little house on wheels.
Last week we had a couple of rainy days and ended up with a pretty deep pool of water under the camper. Over the next four days we are expecting something like 3-5 inches of rain. So if drainage is an issue around our campsite, I am picturing me hanging out a window with an oar. I can also lower one of the cats down the side of the camper to measure the flood level…probably Nemo since he’s easier to see in poor light. And Cleo has long hair…’nuf said.
Okay, so maybe not quite like that, but I do have some areas of concern/question:
- Should I pick up the fresh water hose coil and water filter and place them off the ground?
- Better yet, should I just fill the freshwater tank, use the water pump and stow the hose and filter out of the elements? Or am I being overly concerned?
- I am eyeballing all the vents/openings. Nothing I can do about potential leaks at this point, but I will be watching the ceiling and floor all weekend!
- Condensation is an enemy of an RV even in the desert due to differences between exterior and interior temperatures. We are not currently in the desert, so rain and humidity are also factors. We have two small dehumidifiers that run all the time, one in the front and one in the rear of the camper. I have heard horror stories of condensation running down the walls inside RV’s! No, thank you. Again, I’ll be watching…
The sunny spot at the end of this rainy weekend is that Greg is flying home Sunday night. Yay! I miss him! Plus, he can help me paddle.
